Italy Italy is another exciting wine country coming out of a difficult period where quality has been suspect and one wine scandal has followed another. The good news is that in many areas there has been a huge investment in equipment and replanting and new wine-makers are recovering the good name of Italian wines. Italian wine can be very, very good but it does mean being prepared to look above bargain basement prices and spend a bit more. We have selected a small range of Italian wine that we believe shows the quality and value that can be found. We intend to build on these wines steadily because we love them!
New Zealand New Zealand is one of the newest commercial wine producing companies but it has the highest average selling price of any country in the UK wine market. This is because its Sauvignons are quite outstanding and it has avoided planting a wide number of grape varieties and, instead, stuck with what it does best. It is now growing premium Sauvignon, Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet and Pinot Noir and the quality is superb.
South Africa Long dominated by the power of the big co-operatives, South Africa is changing and new winemakers from smaller estates are beginning to take advantage of the high quality fruit to make their mark in international markets. Black empowerment projects such as Fairvalley are backed by leading, very experienced winemakers to help stimulate the integration of the black community into the commercial fabric of the country.
Spain Spain's future as a producer of quality wine looks bright following investment in new equipment and development of the great potential of its vineyards. The average yield in Spain is around half that allowed by the best regions of France and the resulting quality of the grapes is being harnessed into producing more modern styles using predominantly indigenous grape varieties.
U.S.A. The USA has suffered from over planting in the 90's and the combination of high land prices and high labour costs make it hard to see how the country can compete with South America in the lower price bands. But there are some smaller, focused and well run producers who are establishing a great reputation for both quality and value.
