Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Endrizzi NV, Trentino, Italy
"There is no point trying to drop below £8 with sparkling wines from Champagne or the New World. It is necessary to look to Europe and some of the classic styles of Fizz to find solace. I have yet to be enamoured by a cava at this mark, so one of the most famous but least drunk, at least in the UK, Italian Fizzes must do the job - Prosecco…. This wine is a dream…. This is a very classy wine indeed and I cannot do anything other than to say trade up and drink Endrizzi's Prosecco. Salute." Matthew Jukes, The Wine List 2006.
Sparkling yellow colour with persistent mousse (fine bubbles). The bouquet is intense and elegant, reminiscent of apples and fresh bread, with delicate aromas of vanilla and honey. The palate is dry and fruity, with a luscious, soft and persistent mouth-feel.

Domaine de Brizé Saumur Brut NV, France
This property, 30km south of Angers, is a 37 hectare vineyard growing on clay and gravel soils and the estate makes a variety of styles from dry to sweet, sparkling whites and rosés. Modern techniques are coupled with the wisdom that comes from five generations of winemaking to make this an oenologic jewel. Two stars in the 2002 Guide Hachette and various golds and silvers have rewarded the focus on quality.
The wine is made from Chenin Blanc and is dry, but not aggressively so. It is fragrant and is clean and fresh on the palate.
A really superb sparkling Loire, dry but not aggressive, produced from Chenin Blanc in the small village of Martigne-Briand, close to the town of Saumur. The wine has a beautifully fragrant English late summer fruits bouquet (apples and pears) and is clean, fresh and lively on the palate, a great alternative to Champagne.

Château Rives-Blanques Blanquette de Limoux 2001, France
The traditional sparkling wine of Limoux is made from the local Mauzac grape which has a fresh, appley acidity and with a touch of Chardonnay.
The aromas and flavours are of orchard fruits and the texture is delicate and refreshing.
This sparkling wine is a superb example of Mauzac fizz - soft, fresh, with an elegant (slightly appley) fruit character and persistent mousse. Bottle fermentation adds toastiness & complex flavour.
France's oldest sparkling wine and the first AC in the Languedoc, a true Blanquette de Limoux comes from 90% local Mauzac blended with Chardonnay or Chenin Blanc. Soft, appley nose, quite broad fruit with a lift of summery, floral acidity, this is a lovely Champagne substitute."
